Are young people really disengaged with news and current affairs? Or is this a myth? This online seminar presents findings from a new report “News and Young Australians in 2023: Howe Children and Teens Access, Perceive and are Affected by News Media” about the news practices of Australians aged 8-16 years. The 2023 survey includes new question sets about young people’s news literacy and explores the relationship between young people’s news engagement and their civic engagement. The survey results will be presented by lead researcher, Associate Professor Tanya Notley from Western Sydney University. Following the presentation, we will also hear a response from Annabel Astbury, Head of ABC Education and the Chair of the Australian Media Literacy Alliance.
